The workshop brought together a group of approximately 30 stakeholders including researchers, facility mangers, veterinarians and journal editors. Their goal was to formulate community guidelines on a minimal set of environmental conditions which need to be presented in publications to ensure rigor and robustness of experiments, and reproducibility of outcomes. See blog post here. 2013-06-22 Yuk Fai Leung gave an inaugural lecture on “High-throughput eye drug discovery in zebrafish” in the Opening Ceremony of the "JSIEC-Purdue University Joint Zebrafish Research Laboratory" & the 2nd Li Ka Shing Foundation Ophthalmology Graduate Student Forum (LOGSF) Program at the Joint Shantou International Eye Center of Shantou University and Chinese University of Hong Kong in Shantou, China. Richard Kuhn, the department head of Biological Sciences, also attended the event and gave a lecture on ""Molecular dissection of dengue virus and challenges for vaccines". Coverage by JSIEC (in Chinese), Shantou University Medicial College, Purdue News,BIONEWS of the Department of Biological Sciences at Purdue University. 2013-06-17 Robert Carmer, an HHMI Summer Undergrate Student, was featured in the press releases of the College of Science and Department of Biological Sciences. 2013-06-08 Yuk Fai Leung led a Development and Disease Research section in the 11th USA Biology Olympiad Finals at Purdue University and shared our research on eye drug discovery using the zebrafish model. The students also learned essential skills for zebrafish research. 2013-05-05 – 09 Sylvia Bonilla and Yuk Fai Leung attended the 2013 Annual Meeting of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology and presented their work on novel signal transduction for photoreceptor development and using traditional Chinese medicine to treat retinal degeneration. Sylvia received a National Eye Institute Travel Grant and Yeunkyung Woo Achieve Excellence Travel Award to attend the meeting.
